Late nights, screens and a busy mind make restful sleep hard for many of us. In Ayurveda, two herbs are often named together for a calm mind and good sleep: Brahmi and Jatamansi. This guide explains what each herb is, how it is traditionally used, the common forms you can buy, and what to check before you start.
What is Brahmi?
Brahmi (Bacopa monnieri) is a small creeping herb that grows in wet, marshy places across India. Classical Ayurvedic texts group it with the medhya rasayana herbs – herbs traditionally used to nourish the mind, memory and concentration. In some regions the name “Brahmi” is also used for Mandukaparni (Centella asiatica), so check the botanical name on the label.
Brahmi is traditionally described as cooling. That is one reason it is used in the evening routine of many families, and why Brahmi oil is a common choice for a calming head massage.
What is Jatamansi?
Jatamansi (Nardostachys jatamansi) is a fragrant root from the high Himalayas. Its earthy smell is unmistakable. In Ayurveda it is traditionally used to settle a restless mind and to support natural, restful sleep. It is also used in hair oils and in incense.
Jatamansi grows slowly at high altitude, so good-quality root is precious. Buy from a known pharmacy brand rather than loose, unlabelled powder.
Why are Brahmi and Jatamansi used together?
Ayurveda often links poor sleep with an excess of vata – the quality of movement, lightness and dryness. A mind that keeps racing at night is a typical vata picture. Brahmi is traditionally used to calm and nourish the mind, while Jatamansi is valued for its grounding, settling quality. Taken together in the evening, they may support a calmer wind-down before bed.
They are not sleeping pills. Ayurvedic herbs work best alongside a steady routine: regular sleep and wake times, a light dinner, less screen time and a short walk or pranayama in the evening.
Common forms of Brahmi and Jatamansi
Tablets and vati
Tablets are the easiest way to take Brahmi on busy days. On Ayubazar you can find Himalaya Brahmi Tablets (60 tabs) and Jamna Brahmi Vati (Shilajit), 40 tabs from Jamna Pharmaceutical.
Churna (powder)
Jatamansi is most often taken as a churna. Options include Nahar Pharmaceuticals Jatamansi Churna in 50 g, 100 g and 500 g packs, and Lion Jatamansi Churna from Shree Narnarayan Ayurvedic Pharmacy (Lion).
Oils and ghrita
Brahmi oil for head massage and Brahmi ghrita (herbal ghee) are traditional preparations for evening self-care. Availability changes, so check the product page.
How are they traditionally taken?
The right amount depends on your age, body type and health, so always follow the label or your vaidya’s advice. Common traditional practice is:
- Brahmi tablets: usually taken after meals with water, as directed on the pack.
- Jatamansi churna: a small quantity at night with warm water or warm milk, as advised by your vaidya.
- Brahmi oil: gently massaged into the scalp and the soles of the feet before bed.
Give any herb a few weeks of regular use alongside a good routine, and review with your practitioner.

Safety: talk to your doctor or vaidya first
Brahmi and Jatamansi are traditional herbs, but they are not right for everyone. Speak to your doctor or a qualified vaidya before use if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, giving them to a child, have a long-term health condition, or take any regular medicine – especially for sleep, mood, thyroid or blood pressure. Stop and seek advice if you notice stomach upset or unusual drowsiness. If poor sleep goes on for weeks, see a doctor.
