As the weather turns cooler, many Indian families reach for a familiar Ayurvedic herb: Giloy. Known in classical texts as Guduchi or Amrita, and in Gujarat as Galo, this climbing vine has been part of Ayurvedic practice for centuries. Today you can find it as tablets, churna, juice and satva. This guide explains what Giloy is, how it is traditionally used, which form may suit you, and how to buy genuine Giloy online in India.
What is Giloy (Guduchi)?
Giloy (Tinospora cordifolia) is a climbing plant with heart-shaped leaves that often grows over neem and mango trees. Ayurveda mainly uses its stem. The Sanskrit name Amrita reflects the high regard it holds in traditional texts, where it is described as a rasayana, a rejuvenating herb.
In Ayurveda, Giloy is traditionally considered balancing for all three doshas (Vata, Pitta and Kapha). That is one reason it appears in so many classical formulations, from Sanshamani Vati to Amritarishta.
Traditional uses of Giloy
Ayurvedic practitioners have traditionally used Giloy to:
- Support natural immunity, especially during seasonal changes such as winter and monsoon.
- Support digestion and metabolism, as part of daily rasayana use.
- Support general strength and vitality after periods of tiredness.
- Support healthy skin, when combined with herbs such as neem and manjistha.
These are traditional uses. Giloy is not a substitute for medical treatment, and it does not cure, treat or prevent any disease. Please speak with your doctor or vaidya before starting it.
Forms of Giloy and how to choose
Giloy Ghanvati (tablets)
Ghanvati is made from a concentrated extract of Giloy stem, pressed into tablets. It is easy to carry and has no bitter taste. Popular options include Dabur Giloy Ki Ghanvati and Himalaya Guduchi Tablets.
Giloy Churna (powder)
Churna is dried, powdered Giloy stem. It is usually mixed with warm water or honey. It suits people who prefer the traditional form, such as Jamna Giloy Churna.
Giloy Juice (Ras)
Giloy juice is a ready-to-drink option, often diluted in water. Some versions add tulsi or neem. A local Gujarat option is Lion Giloy Rasa.
Giloy Satva
Satva is the fine, starchy extract of Giloy stem. It is traditionally considered lighter and cooling, and is taken in small amounts. See Dabur Giloya Satva.
How to take Giloy
The right amount depends on the form, the brand and your health. Always follow the dosage printed on the pack, or the advice of your doctor or vaidya. A few general tips:
- Take it at the same time each day, usually after meals unless advised otherwise.
- Dilute juice in water as directed on the label.
- Do not take more than the label dose.
- Use it for the period your vaidya recommends, then review.
Who should be careful
Check with a doctor before taking Giloy if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, giving it to a child, taking regular medicines, preparing for surgery, or have an autoimmune or long-term health condition.
In 2022, the Ministry of AYUSH said Giloy is safe in appropriate doses and warned that look-alike plants can be mistaken for it (source). This is one more reason to buy from licensed, well-known brands.
